How it works

  1. Upload a clean image with distinct color regions
  2. Adjust size and thickness, add keychain function
  3. Preview the color layers
  4. Export your STL, pick colors in your slicer, and slice as usual

Detailed Instructions

Choosing your image

Same core guidance as our other tools — clean, distinct color regions work best:

  • PNG with transparency works best. A transparent background is detected automatically.
  • Fewer, more distinct colors = cleaner results. 2–8 well-separated colors work far better than a busy photo or gradient.
  • Leave a little breathing room around your design — since a keyring hole or ring gets added, artwork that fills the frame edge-to-edge can end up crowded.

🖨️ This tool exports each color as a separate flat piece. That’s ideal if you have a multi-filament printer (like an AMS) that can switch colors automatically. If you’re doing manual filament swaps, our Layered tools are usually a better fit — they build one solid model and tell you exactly which height to pause and swap at.

Adjusting the tool — panel by panel

Detail, Background Removal, Cut Interior Regions, Color Detection

These work exactly as described in Flat Image to STL — set sharpness, clean up the background, punch out any enclosed gaps, then detect and fine-tune your colors.

Keyring / Mounting

Choose one of three mounting styles:

  • None — no mounting point added.
  • Hole in print — punches a hole through the piece itself. Set its position around the edge (in degrees), diameter, and how far in from the edge it sits.
  • Edge ring — adds a small loop on the outside edge instead of punching through your art. Set its position, outer diameter, and band (wall) thickness.

Export Settings

Same base thickness, image thickness, min detail, min line width, and print size controls as Flat Image to STL. If you added a keyring hole or ring, keep enough base thickness for it to hold up to regular handling.
